Celestial Ancestors: A Lillian Pitt Solo Exhibition

Lillian Pitt has dedicated her life and career to drawing inspiration from and reflecting her Columbia River Gorge heritage, most often incorporating into her works the pictographs and petroglyphs found in that region. Lillian’s work bridges millennia of Native American culture with modern, artistic expression. This exhibit showcases the varied media that Lillian has worked in and become known for, and, in particular, highlights the Star People/Star Spirit series that she has heavily focused her artistic attention on over the past few years. Pitt has created these pieces in glass, steel, wood, kiln-fired clay, jewelry and more. This laser-focused attention on these figures has culminated in the creation of life-sized painted steel Star Spirits, representing the pinnacle of this artistic endeavor. To stand among them feels like standing among a forest of celestial beings.

These works represent the powerful entities who govern the sky and its mysteries in Indigenous traditions, and are often associated with guidance and protection, reflecting the interconnectedness between those on Earth and the vast expanse above.
