“The inspiration for this work is inspired by personal narrative and cultural identity. The suggestions of story in the imagery is not so much based on an actual story someone once told me but is rooted in the private mythology we dream up around our own lives to make sense of who we are. I thought about the meaning of masks in my culture, their value as objects of material heritage and their use as transmitters of knowledge and identity and how all of these things, for each Indigenous community, are intrinsically tied to place. Song of the Moon is a story about a dream of being.” ~ Raya Friday
