“In my ledger art piece, I delve into the connection between my Unangax and Alutiiq heritage and the natural world, using an antique Alaskan map as my canvas. The artwork features an Unangax man in a traditional baidarka, navigating the ocean, surrounded by a seasonal representation of Arctic wildlife. Beginning with the Arctic fox in winter and moving clockwise through the snowy owl, polar bear, two seals, deer, goose, halibut, salmon, porcupine, wolf, and grizzly bear, each animal signifies the rhythm of the seasons. Behind them, a swirling pattern of red and orange captures the winds of change, symbolizing the enduring connection to our ancestors and the land. This piece honors my heritage and the profound relationship we share with nature.”
