The raku fired mask pins are original pins of Lillian Pitt’s larger masks. The “Stick Indians” (Steah-hah) with whistling mouths, represent the legendary mountain spirits of the plateau tribes. The animal spirit pins are representations of the endearing innocence and mystical strength of the wild animals in the Northwest.
The Stick Indian is a legendary mountain spirit of the forest. They will rescue a good person or lead a bad one to misfortune. At night they will often imitate the song of a day bird with whistling mouths. Parents will tell their children the legend of the Stick Indian with the precautionary warnings, “If you don’t behave, the Stick Indian will come to get you.”
