Red Cedar in the Hour of Chaos

Support Khu.éex’ (Preston Singletary’s band!) in releasing a new album featuring funk, rock, and Native storytelling!

Khu.éex’ is excited to announce the upcoming release of Red Cedar in the Hour of Chaos.  Shortly after completing “Siyaadlan”, Khu.eex’ returned to Avast! In Seattle in early 2023 with long-time producer Randall Dunn.

As the music unfolded, it reflected not only the chaos of contemporary times, but the increasingly cyclic nature of colonization in many forms; in the face of intergenerational resiliency maintained by Native communities.  Traditional means of wellness across generations is strength, like cedar withstanding storms or floating through the flood.

“Red Cedar in the Hour of Chaos” is a nod to Public Enemy’s “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back”.  While PE’s classic album was a response to/reflection of the chaos of life amidst the 1980’s crack era (and its’ wider effects), Khu.eex’s new album is a response to/reflection of the chaos of life amidst the 2020’s fentanyl era (and its’ wider effects).

“Red Cedar in the Hour of Chaos” continues Khu.eex’s journey through genres, characteristic of their work.  While still grounded in the influence of their late co-founder Bernie Worrell and P-Funk, the album’s scenes traverse jazz, hip-hop, doom metal, psychedelia, and soul; while also bearing cinematic influences of David Lynch and Takeshi Kitano.

This work features bandleader/curator Preston Singletary (bass); vocalists Gene Tagaban, Sondra Segundo, and Air Jazz; Captain Raab (guitar); Tim Kennedy (keyboards); Ed Littlefield (drums); Denny Stern (percussion); Jason Cressey (trombone); Hans Teuber (sax, keyboards); and Steve “Stebmo” Moore (keyboards).

This work will be available digitally and on double color vinyl with three sides of music and a fourth etched side. Liner notes are by Bobby “Dues” Wilson.
