Raven and the Cast of Characters Bid You A Fond Farewell As They Embark On Their Final Voyage

Stonington Gallery is honored to present Hib Sabin’s Solo Exhibition: Raven and the Cast of Characters Bid You A Fond Farewell As They Embark On Their Final Voyage. This is an entirely new body of work created in his 90th year around the sun. The hand-carved juniper sculptures stand as a testament to Sabin’s ongoing creative vitality.

Hib Sabin has spent decades carving a personal lexicon of myth and meaning into his sculpture. Drawing from shamanism, animism, literature, psychology, and global mythology, his sculptures work these influences into characters that live in the thresholds between waking and sleep, human nature and animal instinct, and spirit and mortality.

The usual suspects—ravens, owls, bears, raptors, coyotes, cougars, and more—appear as spirit guides, counterparts, and metaphors for the human soul. Each sculpture acts as a vessel for exploring humanity’s paradoxes: our longing for transcendence and our grounding in instinct, our fragility alongside our creativity, our desire for freedom and more against the constraints we impose on ourselves. Sabin creates what might be called a “meta-myth” where traditions overlap, recombine, and speak across time and culture. A raven may be a trickster, a creator, or a transporter between worlds depending on where the story is told; in Sabin’s hands, it embodies all three at once.

With reverence, wit, and existential depth, Sabin’s sculptures remind us that the human condition is timeless—ageless in its struggles and its observation, its search for connection, and its preparation for what lies beyond.
