Raven and the Cast of Characters Bid You A Fond Farewell As They Embark On Their Final Voyage

Raven and the Cast of Characters Bid You A Fond Farewell As They Embark On Their Final Voyage

Stonington Gallery is honored to present Hib Sabin’s Cast of Characters, an entirely new body of work created in the artist’s 90th year around the sun. This solo exhibition stands as a testament to Sabin’s ongoing creative vitality, even as it carries the possibility (though not the certainty) of being his final major exhibition. Sabin’s signature animal figures—ravens, owls, hawks, and eagles, alongside other kindred beings—continue to serve as sorts of spirit guides and stand-ins for the confounding human experience.

Through his intricate hand-carved juniper sculptures, Sabin weaves his foundation of mythology, shamanism, spirituality, and ritual knowledge into an exploration of the human condition and our inevitable passage through time. The installation itself will mirror the theme of the passage of time—inviting viewers to journey through moments of reflection, connection, and transformation. This is time spent with oneself, with others, with art, and with the enduring questions that have animated his life’s work, and the work of all of our lives: how we live, how we change, and how we find and carry meaning across the thresholds of existence. Raven and the Cast of Characters Bid You A Fond Farewell As They Embark On Their Final Voyage is both a celebration and a passage—one that honors Sabin’s dedication to his craft while allowing space for what may still be to come.
