Fluid in Nature

This October and November Stonington Gallery presents the illustrious works of Dan Friday (Lummi), Preston Singletary (Tlingit), and Raven Skyriver (Tlingit) in our glass exhibition, Fluid in Nature. These three glass masters have played dynamic roles in the advent and development of Northwest Native Glass Art, a movement which ties the contemporary medium of glass with the tradition and imagery of Native cultures.

Friday, Singletary, and Skyriver have international acclaim for their works, including exhibitions in such institutions as the Museum of Northwest Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Ebeltoft Glass Museum in Denmark, and the British Museum. They have gone from being students of some of the biggest names in glass art—both Native and not—to being mentors themselves, all while keeping close ties to their Indigenous communities, heritage, and identities.

The glass art on display for the next two months is rich with vibrancy, movement, and meaning. We invite you to take part in the fluid conversation surrounding modernity and tradition that is present in these astounding works. Glass is fluid in nature, but so, too, are the complex identities these three artists have structured for themselves through this body of work.
