EXHIBITION:The Gifts of Trees
Nathan Gilles’ “Welcome Figure,” made from old-growth western red cedar, depicts a central human face with anatomical features abstractly arranged horizontally with human hands outstretched towards the ends.
This panel is inspired by one of the large hewn and carved retaining wall planks surrounding the recessed floor of the central fire area in the famous “Whale House” in Klukwan, Alaska. One of these large historic carved planks was said to depict a spirit at play in the aurora borealis (northern lights). With this in mind, Gilles included a wing/feather element in his contemporary interpretation with the thoughts of dancing in the shimmering northern night sky!
