mask

This piece titled, “The Hunter,” depicts a bird of prey in partial human form. It is an interpretation of a Tlingit style forehead mask, worn similarly as a frontlet.

The leather attachments used for the tall ears suggest it is a Thunderbird. However, academics have debated whether such stylistic attributes as re-curved beaks and ears represent Hawks and Eagles as well. Thus “The Hunter” is a general reference to all birds of prey.

While analyzing a host of old classic Tlingit pieces Gilles was inspired to create this headdress, attempting to incorporate elements used on the old pieces: leather appendages and the double row of opercula teeth. His goal was to have his contemporary piece echo the attributes of the classic Tlingit stylistic tradition.
