Redd is the Future

Every fishing season I begin to sketch, paint and weave salmon. We are a salmon centric culture. For years we have watched the decline of our salmon return here in our waters. There are many contributing factors and we spend a lot of time in meetings talking about the future of our runs. The Chum run down here in these waters are the last native run. For the past several years we have sat on the beach, while we let the salmon get up stream, just hoping and praying for their survival. These salmon are the same salmon that fed our ancestors. They are sacred. The red refers to their nests of eggs they lay in hopes for the survival of the Salmon People. My salmon paintings are prayers of hope for the continuation of our culture, but first and foremost the health of our salmon.
