“When I was a boy in my teens, I saw an exhibition of paintings by Morris Graves, a Northwest artist with Zen Buddhist learnings at the Duncan Phillips Gallery in Washington, DC. One of his paintings, “Little Known Bird of the Inner Eye” has remained deeply embedded in my consciousness ever since. I may say that this carving of mine is an homage to Graves, though the thematic approach is fundamentally Westen in its grounding, while Graves’ is Eastern.”
