Kéet gaaw (Killerwhale Drum)

Deer Hide, Copper Acrylic Paint, Beater

“The powerfully sonorous tone of this gaaw is symbolic of the loud sound made by the slapping of tails on the water’s surface. My family name Kéet.axch (Ketah) literally translates to: ‘Killerwhale slapping its tail on the water’ (while hunting). In addition to ‘drum’, ‘clock’ is also a translation of gaaw. One might imagine the beating of this drum as keeping time while our people work in a concerted effort to have our needs met.” – Dave Ketah
