“Tlingit people valued copper. The tináa (copper shield) symbolised status, yet more than that. Lineage, heritage, and identity. This killerwhale design painted in copper is symbolic of our reverence of this majestic creature that many of us identify with as our crest. The images one sees in ‘Northwest Coast Native Art’ carry profoundly more than aesthetic value. When a person possessed a copper, at their passing, it would be passed on to a successor. Let us be faithful stewards of the great wealth we have in our heritage, and position ourselves to pass it on to our successors.” – Dave Ketah
