This style of seal was one developed by Fred’s father, Floyd Sr., and so is one distinctly associated with the Kingeekuk family as it has been passed down through the generations.
Extremely delicate lines of scrimshaw are built up on the surface of the ivory to create a realistic impression of spotted fur, soft muzzle and glossy eyes. It is an innovative method of scrimshaw that take much skill and practice to master.
Fred Kingeekuk was born in 1966 on St. Lawrence Island, AK. Known for his consistently high quality work, Fred has said that he goes over 80 miles around the island of St. Lawrence to dig up the special bone used in his elaborate carvings.
