Horst Janssen (1929–1995) was a German illustrator, poster artist, printmaker, and draftsman. Starting in the 1950s, Janssen worked primarily in lithography and woodcuts. He received numerous awards throughout his career while also having a colorful social reputation that included many marriages, a battle with alcoholism, and being very outspoken about his opinions.

A wonderful example of his combining subject and style is in For Horst where Bartow blends the shading style and line quality of Horst Janssen’s work with a portrait of the artist making a direct connection to Janssen’s influence in Bartow’s exploration of his own practices.
