EXHIBITION:
The Morris-Wiseman CollectionA supernatural warrior creature, Sisiutl is a double-headed sea serpent and a crest of the Kwakiutl/Kwakwaka’wakw and Nuxalk peoples.
Sisiutl is said to be able to transform into various forms, including a self-propelled canoe. Touching the serpent or even looking at it can cause death, and yet it is a source of great magical powers. It can bring wealth, and when painted over a doorway it serves as a guardian to the house.
The two-headed serpent is closely associated with war and strength and protection.
