This rattle represents the form of an oystercatcher, a bird common on the North Pacific Coast. The two human figures on the back are medicine men, one twisting the hair of the other to get a confession. Surmounting the oystercatcher’s neck is the power figure of the shaman. Towards the handle of the rattle is a supernatural figure that has attributes of mountain goat and octopus. On the underside of the oystercatcher, carved in low relief, is the face of a hawk.
