My name is Tiffany Vanderhoop, my Haida name is S’idluujaa, which means Huckleberry Woman. Residing in Aquinnah, Massachusetts, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, my father is Aquinnah Wampanoag. My mother is Haida of Gaw Git’ans Masset inlet Eagle Clan, from Old Massett, Haida Gwaii, British Columbia. I live on the same land where my ancestors have lived since time immemorial.
I come from a family of weavers and having been weaving since I was 7. I started weaving Northern geometric textiles (Ravenstail) and then progressed to Naaaxiin weaving. I’m inspired by ancient patterns used by my ancestors and the revitalization of indigenous cultures and the varied diversity. I love keeping the ancient art forms alive, and I want to be able to show my children the abundance of culture and connection. The weaving patterns I use in my beadwork are an unbroken link to our ancestors, and it is important to carry these forth to future generations.
