Roger Gray first learned to carve with his cousin, Henry Green, and later with his cousin, Mike Epp. He attended Fraser Valley College in 1987, and learned about printmaking, wood-block printing, and etching. Between 1988 and 1989, Roger completed courses in teaching Art and Theatre at the University of Victoria. One year later, in 1990, he apprenticed with Henry Green by working on a 10-foot totem pole in Vancouver. In 1991, he focused on designing courses for the Theatre program at UVic, and he moved to Duncan in 1992. Roger continued his growth as an artist by winning the Cowichan Tribes Logo Contest for the Elders Conference in 1993, and he tied for third place in the Heritage Centers Christmas Cards contest one year later.
