Joshua Watts is a Nuu-Chah-Nulth, and Adopted Sḵwx̱wú7mesh First Nations professional artist, and Cultural Carrier. He has been creating art since 2013. He was raised in Squamish away from his ancestral territories of Port Alberni and Lake Cowichan. When he was growing up, he had little connection with his Ancestral culture. After reconnecting, Joshua realized how important culture and art was in his life. Since then, he has dedicated his practice toward youth development and is a very strong advocate for cultural revitalization and passing on traditional knowledge in the many communities he is a part of.
He strives to bring people together through art and culture to create that strong unity First nations communities are recognized for.
He recently finished his debut solo exhibition titled “Gifts from the Ancestors” shown at the
Victoria arts council. He is also leading research towards cultural revitalization, repatriation, and
facilitating land-based learning initiatives
