Guustl’as Rorick is a multidisciplinary artist and cultural worker from Skidegate, Haida Gwaii. He is a proud member of the Xaayda/Xaada Nation, with ancestral ties to both the southern and northern regions of Haida Gwaii, and belongs to the Naa Saagaas XaaydaGaay clan. Guustl’as identifies as Nang Gaahlingdaay Sding, a Haida term meaning “two-spirited,” which reflects a deeply rooted cultural role that embodies both masculine and feminine energies. This identity informs their approach to both art and life—grounded in compassion, balance, and a strong spiritual connection to their community and traditions.
Their name, Guustl’as—meaning “The Tide that Overcame Everything”—was given by their sister, accomplished artist Raven Thorgeirson, whose guidance and creativity have been an ongoing source of inspiration.
Guustl’as is an apprentice under Haida artist Cori Savard, he is also a graduate of the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art (2024). Their practice spans visual art, dance, and performance, rooted in Haida formline and storytelling. As a singer, dancer, and mask performer with the Hltaaxuulang Gud ad K’aajuu dance group in Skidegate, Guustl’as expresses both masculine and feminine dance styles, embracing a fluid and inclusive approach to cultural performance.
In addition to his art, Guustl’as is deeply committed to cultural revitalization. Since 2019, they have worked with youth through the Laanas Dagang.a Swan Bay Rediscovery Program and the K’aayxada Adventure Camp—programs that shaped his own path and now allow them to support the next generation as cultural leaders, artists, and land stewards.
Their work is guided by the values of resilience, respect, and community. Through both creative practice and cultural engagement, Guustl’as Rorick carries forward the legacy of their ancestors while nurturing space for future generations to thrive.
