Edward Joe

Edward Joe, a member of the Cowichan Band, was born on Vancouver Island in the small town of Ladysmith on a cold wintry day in December 1969. Later in his youth he moved to Duncan where he currently resides. He is the second oldest of four children, on brother and two sisters. He started creating the unique art of the Pacific Northwest Coast in 1987.

In 1992, Edward graduated with a Provincial diploma. He continued his desire to educate himself and enrolled at one of Canada’s finest art schools, the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, receiving his diploma in 1998. Wishing to pursue his search for knowledge and individual style of expression, he challenged his artistic abilities and enrolled into the Associate of Fine Arts Degree program at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was in Santa Fe that Edward completed his Associate Degree in 2001. Edward grew up surrounded with a rich culture that has had a mountainous influence on himself as well as his art.

Edward’s works include stories and ancient legends of the Northwest Coast, which are depicted in his many vibrant creations. The art he creates develops and changes continuously.

Born and raised in Ladysmith, B.C., he works in both traditional and contemporary styles and finds that most of these designs come from visions in his mind and spirit. He is involved in the cultural life of his community, participating in traditional ceremonies and spirit dances. After receiving a diploma from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design Edward then continued his studies at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This talented young artist is gaining recognition through exhibitions and is continuing to expand his skills with work in a variety of media. He currently does paintings and gold and silver jewelry.
