During a time of famine, a village had used up their winter cache of food, and was down to boiling fish bones and moldy fish ends. The son of a wealthy chief insulted the Salmon People when he spat out the foul-tasting salmon. When the salmon returned to the river, the boy was lured into the river, and he became one of the Salmon People so that he could experience the life of a salmon, and the sacrifice Salmon People make to mankind for food. The next year when the salmon returned, and the women were cleaning salmon that were caught, one of them hit a copper neck ring when cutting off the head of a salmon. They recognized it as that of the chief’s son, and they understood the lesson. This story is told to children to illustrate proper attitudes toward environment and that which it provides
