The Bat
An exploration of a fascination that was somewhat unbreakable in time and mystery. In my youth like many, form line are was a common language for people to learn and earn respect in a market place. Spending a lot of time with collections over the years, learning nuances of different tribes that represent crest of their lineage, I was curious.
At the time of 2020, I was working in a studio without windows, working away on many carvings and at times in between going to my drafting table. I felt a reminding of what it was like to draw and learn to cut film separations with my friend Bruce Cook III.
I had enough time in between work and energy where I revisited different ideas over time and as friends and colleagues came to visit they all called the studio the Bat cave. In 2020 when my studio was broken into all left in the office where my old sketches and tools. A computer that had years of work on it was stolen. I had to let go what I couldn’t get back and understand what was lost is still within me.
Looking over the papers of what was roughed through, a number of bat sketches and I threw away 10 yrs of those small ideas to hold on to one. No form line and not Salish. It is an exploration of lines that come together to explore mythology of the time I exist. A training exercise to examine shapes that are unquestionably part of these lands. It doesn’t conform to convention of rules because it only stands as anomaly of fan art.
