“The skate fish (also written as ts’idGa) is a crest often associated with the Eagle moiety in Haida culture. “I chose to depict the skate because each being is visible to us in animal form, but can also take human form. Human like features can be seen in the skate when looking at their bellies. These features are more visible in juvenile skates. The skate that lives in the surrounding waters of Haida Gwaii can also be found in Alaska through to California. Existing below the waves, along the coast traveled by the many nations who participate in the Canoe Journey. We are all interconnected.”
