“This was a fun piece to make because of all the different elements that went into it. It is an all red cedar basket with canary grass false embroidery representing fish racks, those used by Pacific Northwest Coast people as we put up fish in the summer to be stored for the winter. The bottom starts out double warped, plaited, turned into a compact twine from a square into a circle; alternating two rows of z-twist, one row of s-twist in a bird tracks pattern. The compact twine continues as it turns up the side of the basket into an all z-twist. This basket was woven “free form” which means I didn’t weave around a mold. This is my own interpretation of a basket I chose to replicate from the Royal BC Museum.”
