Twenty years ago, George David (Nuu-chah-nulth) and Shaun Peterson began this mask together. But, after blocking it out, the two never completed it, and it has been in Shaun’s studio since. George had recently, tragically, unexpectedly passed away earlier in the month, so Shaun picked up the mask, and imagined how he would complete and paint it. It is a tribute to George, whose sense of Nuu-chah-nulth design Shaun always admired. A Wolf–an important symbol in George’s family and Nuu-chah-nulth communities–wraps around the mask from cheek to cheek.
