Marvin Oliver is the son of Emmett Oliver (Quinault), who is credited with starting the Paddle to Seattle canoe journey in 1989. In 1985 dugout canoes were almost a lost art in the Pacific Northwest, found mostly in museums. Today, the canoe journey is an annual event, with hundreds of families participating.

This print–which precedes the Canoe Journey–depicts the silhouette of a canoe, with blue paddles rising from the back, and a bold Sea Lion form in the prow.
