On the eve of launching his first canoe in 1972, Duane Pasco stayed up all night with Joe David and Nathan Jackson as they painted the prow of the canoe. The next morning Pasco, David, Jackson, Barry Herem, Marvin Oliver, and others grabbed their paddles set off in the canoe for a potlatch at Camp Norwester on Lopez Island, WA, organized by Bill Holm. Since that day Pasco figures this paddle has steered him over one thousand miles of sea travel.
