Coyotes and Grandson of Dog
This piece is inspired by an original carving created for the Chehalis tribe derived from one of their legends. It is said that in the beginning of their mythology the world was ruled by bird beings with feathers that shimmered in the light. For their entertainment, the birds played a game with a golden ring that was sacred to them. As time passed, four Coyote brothers–led by Grandson of Dog–decided to steal the ring. This sent a message throughout the world that the birds would not rule forever.
In this piece the abstract representation shows the stolen ring in the center, with the culprits moving in a whorl around it. The coyotes and Grandson of Dog emerge from one another, symbolic of their dedication to seeing their mission through and simultaneously, their unity.
