Art of Alaska: An Artistic FrontierRoy Weyiouanna
Inupiaq
Roy Weyiouanna is an Inupiaq Eskimo, born in 1958 and raised in Shishmaref, Alaska. Living in a carving environment, Roy taught himself to carve drift wood in grade school. Eventually Roy moved on to ivory and bone carvings. Roy’s rib and vertebrae sculptures have a refined and polished quality. Like many Inupiaq artists, Roy comes from a large family of talented carvers. Roy enjoys sculpting mother and child figures and fishing.
