Raven Ellipse – Glass
EXHIBITION:Barry Herem: Wood. Glass. Paper. Steel.
This is one of two new designs in sandblasted glass. The original was carved in cedar from a drawing which was then transferred to an image on this 20-inch diameter plate of half-inch clear glass. The design was then etched 3/16ths deep by Todd Robinson of Port Alberni, British Columbia.
In this image we see in profile Raven, the culture hero of traditional native Northwest Coast mythology, with his large circular wing sweeping forward from a circular wing joint (left), around and under Raven’s profile head. The arcing wing with its design elements connects to his downturned talon at the bottom of the design and his connecting leg emerges from beneath the wing.
