EXHIBITION:

This type of gun manufactured by Hudson Bay Company for the fur trade was in continuous production, maybe longer than any other firearm in history. In the records of the Hudson Bay Company from 1761, there was mention of a specific gun called a Northwest Gun: a request by a gunsmith to the Company for parts “same as for the Northwest Gun.” The Northwest Gun was traded to indigenous people over most of Canada, the Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Plains. This gun has been cut down and is often called a “Canoe Gun,” shortened for use at close quarters, as in a canoe. The design carved in formline represents brown bear.
