The imagery composed on this drum by Nathan Gilles was inspired by a historic Tlingit mid-nineteenth century bentwood box. George Thornton Emmons had collected the box at Klukwan in 1902. The old box had beautiful formline work painted on the two side panels, composed ingeniously in a circular design. These two particular designs have long intrigued Gilles, the original artist having composed a symmetrical cleaved arrangement in a space that was not typically circular.
